The only question on everyone’s mind is what their future holds. “Women are going through a crisis of education and employment.” About two-thirds of Afghanistan is under 25 years of age. In addition, about a generation is unaware of the Taliban regime from 1997 to 2001. During that time, the Taliban violated all barbaric laws. The girls were barred from going to school where women from working. U.S.-backed forces ousted the Taliban from power in Afghanistan in 2001. Since then, Taliban militants have killed thousands of Afghans in the country. This time around, however, the voice of the Taliban has softened somewhat after the occupation of Afghanistan. The Taliban has assured students that their education will not be disrupted. In addition, women’s rights will be respected and skilled professionals are also urged to not leave the country. Half a dozen Afghan students and young professionals have expressed fears of losing their freedom in talks with Reuters. This is a young population that is accustomed to listening to mobile phones and pop music. These young men know the Taliban only in the stories told by their parents.
